The Glutinous Rice Dumplings come in season for the celebrated Dumpling Festival. Intrigue by the sheer size of the dumpling put up on display (see the top right dumpling...huge eh..), mum decided to give it a try. Of course, she couldn't just buy 1, noooo she had to buy 3.

First thing to comment is that dumplings from top grade restaurants also feature a top price tag. That large dumpling itself cost a little over $10.00 (I could probably buy 6 normal dumplings at the coffeeshop) and the smallest one there (with the red string) cost about $5.00.
I can't really remember the names of the dumplings but I roughly remember their contents and oh, how could I not forget the taste...
  • Big dumpling - Very very chewy. Stuffed with chicken (and it had small pieces of bones in it).
  • Medium Dumpling - Green Split Bean paste (tau suan for the locals) plus some meat and salted egg yolk.
  • Small Dumpling (red string) - Mixed Rice Dumpling with some meat.

Not really a dumpling fan (except for those of my aunty florence and those which taste good), I didn't really go for the Crystal Jade Rice Dumplings.
They felt too chewy in general, as though they were boiled for hours on end. The meat was a bit dry and the stuffing was not enough. However, I did enjoy the Mixed Rice Dumpling featuring different types of rice. The texture was firm and not chewy like a paste of sticky rice.

Nonetheless, the dumplings are fragrant when heated up and I think they cater more to a specific crowd rather than frequent dumpling eaters. (usually the experts)

So, in overall, try these dumplings for the season if you can afford the $$$$. You might just like it with a smile.
