Local Delights. Prized Winners!

Century Egg with Meatball Porridge

I had a date with Mama Helen today for lunch, somewhere in a lone, secluded corner of Yishun Ring Road. (Oh for crying out loud...she's my grandma. Don't think otherwise and we had lunch across the Church)

We dined in finery (Singapore style) at the local coffee shop in a sumptuous serving of porridge. Mmmmm. What's unique about this local delight is that it embodies the best of home cooked food. I have tried porridge in many places but it is always the one at this stall that reminds me of the warmth and sincerity of home itself.

The porridge is smooth, thick and tasty, plus garnished generously with You Tiao (Fried Dough Sticks), Fried Shallots and a dash of spring onions. My serving was brimming with bits of Century Egg (100 days old egg buried in the ground..or was it mud?) and meaty goodness.

It's a wonder that for so much it could cost so little - at $2.50 only!

Fried Hokkien Mee

My Grandma and I had a little adventure of our own today. We journeyed to the fragrance of Fried Hokkien Mee which we could smell a mile away. (Okay I am exaggerating, but it is that good or we wouldn't have a second Lunch after the porridge)

This is one stall that I must recommend to you Noodle Lovers. The Fried Hokkien Mee at Yishun Central is one of the best in the northern part of Singapore. The noodles are smooth and springy, and not too watery. There is a delicate balance in the amount of rich stock used and the fragrance of the noodles itself.

Oh My Gosh, Look at the luscious and crispy Pork Fat!

Fried Pork Fat (Health Advocates will scream in fear) is what truly sets this Fried Hokkien Noodles apart from the rest. Once the lovely bits of fat are topped on the noodles, each mouthful has that extra crunch with it. The fat literally melts in your mouth and keeps you wanting for more.

This may not be the healthiest of dishes, but for that goodness so similar to what was found in the past, its definitely a-okay to indulge in it once in a while.

Rating for Fried Hokkien Mee : 4.5/5
